Some Thoughts on Religion

"Vertical vs. Horizontal Prayer"

I really like this article by Roger Ebert:

Fanatical Islamic Extremism

The following quotes are from the English translation of the Qu'ran, the holy book of Islam. They are passages that command Muslims to kill non-Muslims. I have also included a couple of passages that describe the paradise that the Qu'ran promises to reward its followers with if they obey the Qu'ran.

THAT PEACEFUL RELIGION

"Tell the unbelievers that if they mend their ways their past shall be forgiven; but if they persist in sin, let them reflect upon the fate of their forefathers. Make war on them until idolatry shall cease and Allah's religion shall reign supreme. If they desist, Allah is cognizant of all their actions; but if they give no heed, know then that Allah will protect you."-- the Qu'ran

"Let not the unbelievers think that they will ever get away. They have not the power so to do. Muster against them all the men and cavalry at your command, so that you may strike terror into the enemy of Allah and your enemy, and others besides them who are unknown to you but known to Allah. All that you give for the cause of Allah shall be repaid you. You shall not be wronged."--the Qu'ran

"Prophet, rouse the faithful to arms. If there are twenty steadfast men among you, they shall vanquish two hundred; and if there are a hundred, they shall rout a thousand unbelievers, for they are devoid of understanding."--the Qu'ran

"Those that have embraced the Faith and fled their homes and fought for the cause of Allah, and those that have sheltered them and helped them - they are the true believers. They shall receive mercy and a generous provision."--the Qu'ran

"When the sacred months are over slay the idolaters wherever you find them. Arrest them, besiege them, and lie in ambush everywhere for them."--the Qu'ran

"Do you fear them? Surely Allah is more deserving of your fear, if you are true believers. Make war on them: Allah will chastise them at your hands and humble them. He will grant you victory over them and heal the spirit of the faithful."--the Qu'ran

"Those that have embraced the Faith, and left their homes, and fought for Allah's cause with their wealth and with their persons, are held in higher regard by Allah. It is they who shall triumph. Their Lord has promised them joy and mercy from Himself, and gardens of eternal bliss where they shall dwell for ever. Allah's reward is great indeed."--the Qu'ran

"Fight against such of those to whom the Scriptures were given as believe neither in Allah nor the Last Day, who do not forbid what Allah and His apostle have forbidden, and do not embrace the true Faith, until they pay tribute out of hand and are utterly subdued.

"The Jews say Ezra is the son of God, while the Christians say the Messiah is the son of God. Such are their assertions, by which they imitate the infidels of old. Allah confound them! How perverse they are!"

--the Qu'ran

"It is He who has sent forth His apostle with guidance and the true Faith to make it triumphant over all religions, however much the idolaters may dislike it."--the Qu'ran

"Believers, why is it that when it is said to you: 'March in the cause of Allah,' you linger slothfully in the land? Are you content with this life in preference to the life to come? Few indeed are the blessings of this life, compared to those of the life to come.

"If you do not fight, He will punish you sternly, and replace you by other men. You will in no way harm Him: for Allah has power over all things."

--the Qu'ran

"Whether unarmed or well-equipped, march on and fight for the cause of Allah, with your wealth and with your persons. This will be best for you, if you but knew it."--the Qu'ran

"Prophet, make war on the unbelievers and the hypocrites and deal rigorously with them. Hell shall be their home: an evil fate."-the Qu'ran

"Those that stayed at home were glad that they were left behind by Allah's apostle, for they had no wish to fight for the cause of Allah with their wealth and with their persons. They said to each other: 'Do not go to war, the heat is fierce.' Say to them: 'More fierce is the heat of Hell-fire!' Would that they understood!"--the Qu'ran

"Whenever a Chapter was revealed, saying : 'Believe in Allah and fight alongside His apostle,' the rich among them excused themselves to you, saying: 'Leave us with those who are to stay behind.'

"They were content to be with those who stayed behind: a seal was set upon their hearts, leaving them bereft of understanding. But the Apostle and the men who shared his faith fought with their goods and with their persons. These shall be rewarded with good things. These shall surely prosper. Allah has prepared for them gardens watered by running streams, in which they shall abide for ever. That is the supreme triumph.

"Some Arabs of the desert turned up with excuses, begging leave to stay behind; while those who denied Allah and His apostle remained idle at home. A woeful scourge shall fall on those of them that disbelieved."

--the Qu'ran

"Allah has purchased from the faithful their lives and worldly goods and in return has promised them the Garden. They will fight for the cause of Allah, slay and be slain. Such is the true promise which He has made them in the Torah, the Gospel and the Koran. And who is more true to his pledge than Allah? Rejoice then in the bargain you have made. That is the supreme triumph."--The Qu'ran

"Believers, make war on the infidels who dwell around you. Deal firmly with them. Know that Allah is with the righteous."--the Qu'ran

"You shall all taste the grievous scourge: you shall be rewarded according to your deeds. But the true servants of Allah shall be well provided for, feasting on fruit, and honored in the gardens of delight. Reclining face to face upon soft couches, they shall be served with a goblet filled at a gushing fountain, white, and delicious to those who drink it. It will neither dull their senses nor befuddle them. They shall sit with bashful, dark-eyed virgins, as chaste as the sheltered eggs of ostriches."--the Qu'ran

"When you meet the unbelievers in the battlefield strike off their heads and, when you have laid them low, bind your captives firmly. Then grant them their freedom or take ransom from them, until War shall lay down her burdens.

"Thus shall you do. Had Allah willed, He could Himself have punished them; but He has ordained it thus that He might test you, the one by the other.

"As for those who are slain in the cause of Allah, He will not allow their works to perish. He will vouchsafe them guidance and ennoble their state; He will admit them to the Paradise He has made known to them.

"Believers, if you help Allah, Allah will help you and make you strong. But the unbelievers shall be consigned to perdition. He will bring their deeds to nothing."

--the Qu'ran

"The faithful say: 'If only a Chapter were revealed!' But when a forthright Chapter is revealed and war is mentioned in it, you see the infirm of heart looking towards you as though they are fainting away for fear of death. Yet obedience and courteous speech would become them more. Indeed, should war be decided upon, it would be better for them to be true to Allah."--the Qu'ran

"Those that disbelieve and debar others from Allah's path and in the end die unbelievers shall not be shown forgiveness by Allah. Therefore do not falter or sue for peace when you have gained the upper hand. Allah is on your side and will not grudge you the reward of your labours.

"The life of this world is but a sport and a pastime."

--the Qu'ran

"Say to the desert Arabs who stayed behind: 'You shall be called upon to fight a mighty nation, unless they embrace Islam. If you prove obedient, Allah will reward you well. But if you run away, as you have done before this, He will inflict on you a stern chastisement.'"--the Qu'ran

"Muhammad is Allah's apostle. Those who follow him are ruthless to the unbelievers but merciful to one another. ... Through them He seeks to enrage the unbelievers. Yet to those of them who will embrace the Faith ... Allah has promised forgiveness and a rich reward."--the Qu'ran

"The true believers are those that have faith in Allah and His apostle, and never doubt; and who fight with their wealth and their persons for the cause of Allah. Such are those whose faith is true."--the Qu'ran

"For the unbelievers We have prepared chains and fetters, and a blazing Fire. But the righteous shall drink of a cup tempered at the Camphor Fountain, a gushing spring at which the servants of Allah will refresh themselves: they who keep their vows and dread the far-spread terrors of Judgment-day ...

"Allah will deliver them from the evil of that day, and make their faces shine with joy. He will reward them for their steadfastness with robes of silk and the delights of Paradise. Reclining there upon soft couches, they shall feel neither the scorching heat nor the biting cold. Trees will spread their shade around them, and fruits will hang in clusters over them.

"They shall be served with silver dishes, and beakers as large as goblets which they themselves shall measure: and cups brim-full with ginger-flavored water from a fount called Salsabil. They shall be attended by boys graced with eternal youth, who to the beholder's eyes will seem like sprinkled pearls. When you gaze upon that scene, you will behold a kingdom blissful and glorious.

"They shall be arrayed in garments of fine green silk and rich brocade, and adorned with bracelets of silver. Their Lord will give them pure nectar to drink.

"Thus shall you be rewarded; your high endeavors are gratifying to Allah."

--the Qu'ran

Most Muslims are peaceful people, but their holy book clearly is not peaceful, and therefore neither is their religion if you define it as adherence to the Qu'ran.

An Islamic court in Nigeria recently sentenced a pregnant woman to be stoned to death for having premarital sex. Things like this are still happening.

And now, just so you know I'm not just picking on Islam:

"Thus saith the Lord God of Israel, Put every man his sword by his side, and go in and out from gate to gate throughout the camp, and slay every man his brother, and every man his companion, and every man his neighbor."--from the Bible, the holy book of Judaism and Christianity

"He that sacrificeth unto any god, save unto the Lord only, he shall be utterly destroyed."--the Bible

"Now therefore kill every male among the little ones, and kill every woman that hath known man by lying with him. But all the women children, that have not known a man by lying with him, keep alive for yourselves." [God speaking]--the Bible

"And all the congregation brought him without the camp, and stoned him with stones, and he died; as the Lord commanded Moses."--the Bible [the man's crime was picking up sticks on the Sabbath]

"Now go and smite Amalek, and utterly destroy all that they have, and spare them not; but slay both man and woman, infant and suckling, ox and sheep, camel and ass." [God speaking]--the Bible

"Therefore the fathers shall eat the sons in the midst of thee, and the sons shall eat their fathers; and I will execute judgments in thee, and the whole remnant of thee will I scatter into all the winds." [God speaking]--the Bible

"Samaria shall become desolate; for she hath rebelled against her God: they shall fall by the sword: their infants shall be dashed in pieces, and their women with child shall be ripped up."--the Bible

"Stay ye not, but pursue after your enemies, and smite the hindmost of them; suffer them not to enter into their cities: for the Lord your God hath delivered them into your hand."--the Bible

"Whosoever would not seek the Lord God of Israel should be put to death, whether small or great, whether man or woman."--the Bible

"Go ye through the city, and smite: let not your eye spare, neither have ye pity: Slay utterly old and young, both maids, and little children, and women." [God speaking]--the Bible

"For thus saith the Lord God; I will bring up a company upon them, and will give them to be removed and spoiled. And the company shall stone them with stones, and dispatch them with their swords; they shall slay their sons and their daughters, and burn up their houses with fire."--the Bible

"Think not that I am come to send peace on earth: I came not to send peace, but a sword. For I am come to set a man at variance against his father, and the daughter against her mother, and the daughter in law against her mother in law. And a man's foes shall be they of his own household." [Jesus speaking]--from the New Testament of the Bible, holy book of Christianity

"He that is not with me is against me; and he that gathereth not with me scattereth abroad." [Jesus speaking]--the New Testament of the Bible

"But those mine enemies, which would not that I should reign over them, bring hither, and slay them before me." [Jesus speaking]--the New Testament of the Bible

"But now, he that hath a purse, let him take it, and likewise his scrip: and he that hath no sword, let him sell his garment, and buy one." [Jesus speaking]--the New Testament of the Bible

"If a man abide not in me, he is cast forth as a branch, and is withered; and men gather them, and cast them into the fire, and they are burned." [Jesus speaking]--the New Testament of the Bible

This is just a small sampling.

It is time to reject these barbaric holy books, once and for all. It is time to acknowledge the fact that these books do not constitute a basis for morality, but rather a basis for immorality. It is time to end the killing.
